Bus from Ivanovo to Kostroma: Schedule and Tickets

Kostroma sits 105 kilometres north of Ivanovo on regional road P600, a clean two-hour coach run through the small town of Furmanov and the Volga-bank country south-east of the city. Coaches depart roughly every two hours during the day. The route is the standard onward leg of a clockwise Golden Ring itinerary after Vladimir, Suzdal and Ivanovo, bringing you out onto the Volga at the cradle of the Romanov dynasty. Fares run 400-700 roubles one-way. Many travellers split the journey with a half-day in Plyos, the painted village on the Volga halfway between Ivanovo and Kostroma.

What to expect on board

Most slots use modern Higer or MAZ interregional coaches with reclining seats, air conditioning, USB charging and an overhead luggage rack. A few suburban services run smaller PAZ vehicles with upright commuter seating. No comfort stop on the short run; no on-board catering. Most through-services have a working toilet. Announcements in Russian only — show the driver "Кострома" in Cyrillic if you are unsure of your stop.

Where to board in Ivanovo

Ivanovo Bus Station is on Lezhnevskaya Street, just south of the railway station. From the city centre take any south-bound city bus to "Avtovokzal" (15 minutes) or a 200-rouble taxi. The Kostroma departures use the right-hand bay of the terminal; the ticket window inside sells same-day tickets for cash or Russian-issued Mir card. Online booking is available a few days ahead for the through-services. The departures board lists "Кострома" in Cyrillic.

Where you arrive in Kostroma

Kostroma Bus Station is on Kineshemskoye Shosse, about two kilometres south-east of the Volga embankment and the historic centre. From the platforms take bus 2 or marshrutka 14 (15 minutes) to Susanin Square, the radial heart of the 1781 Catherine-the-Great street plan. The Ipatiev Monastery is on the opposite (west) bank of the Volga — a city bus or a ten-minute taxi across the bridge.

Best time of day to travel

Morning departures (08:00-10:00) give you a comfortable afternoon and evening in Kostroma, with time for the Ipatiev Monastery and a Volga embankment walk at sunset. The 14:00-16:00 window is also good if you have spent the morning on the Ivanovo Constructivist walk. The last evening service from Ivanovo to Kostroma is typically around 19:00; the last return service from Kostroma to Ivanovo is around 18:00. Sundays have a slightly reduced schedule.

Booking tips

Online booking through a Russian aggregator works for the through-services; local shuttles are pay-on-board. Book three to five days ahead for weekend slots. Mir cards, SBP transfers and Russian-issued Visa/Mastercard issued before 2022 are accepted online; foreign cards generally fail. Choose your seat at checkout — front-row seats over the front axle are the smoothest. The driver scans the QR on your phone at boarding.
