Bus from Kostroma to Plyos: Schedule and Tickets
Plyos is 70 kilometres south-east of Kostroma along regional road P600 on the right bank of the Volga. The suburban bus run takes about 90 minutes and is the easiest way to reach the painted village that Isaac Levitan made famous in his 1888-1890 landscapes. Coaches depart three or four times per day in season and twice daily in winter; this is a country route, not a high-frequency commuter line, so plan around the timetable. The road climbs through a series of small Volga-bank villages with onion-domed wooden chapels, the kind of rural Russia that disappears fifteen kilometres inland. Fares run 250-450 roubles.
What to expect on board
This is a plain suburban (prigorodny) bus — typically a PAZ or LiAZ city vehicle with upright seating, high floor and no on-board toilet. Overhead luggage racks handle small bags; larger suitcases ride underneath. No comfort stops are scheduled on the short run, no on-board catering and no air conditioning on the older fleet. Bring water in summer and a layer in winter. The driver announces stops in Russian; the route makes ten or twelve halts along the way.
Where to board in Kostroma
Kostroma Bus Station is on Kineshemskoye Shosse, two kilometres south-east of the Volga embankment and the historic centre. From Susanin Square take bus 2 or marshrutka 14 (15 minutes) to reach the terminal. The Plyos departures use the right-hand bay of the building; the ticket window sells same-day tickets for cash or Russian-issued Mir card. The departures board lists "Плёс" in Cyrillic. Boarding is first come first served; arrive 15 minutes early in summer when day-trippers from Kostroma fill the bus.
Where you arrive in Plyos
Plyos has no proper bus terminal — coaches stop in the central square (Sovetskaya Square) on the Volga embankment. The town is so compact that nearly every guesthouse is within ten minutes' walk of the stop. The Isaac Levitan Memorial Museum is a 200-metre stroll along the embankment; the Levitan Hill viewpoint and the wooden Church of the Resurrection are a steep five-minute climb above the village.
Best time of day to travel
Mid-morning departures (09:00-11:00) are the best slot — they give you the whole afternoon in Plyos with light still good for photographs of the wooden churches at Levitan Hill. The return service from Plyos to Kostroma is typically late afternoon (16:00-18:00); confirm with the driver on arrival and check the printed timetable, because the last service in winter can be as early as 15:30. There is no public transport between Plyos and Kostroma after dark — taxi the only fallback.
Booking tips
Pay-on-board or buy-at-window — online booking is not standard on this rural route. Cash in roubles is the most reliable; some on-board terminals accept Russian Mir cards. Bring small bills, the driver may not have change for a 5000-rouble note. In high summer the bus can fill on weekends; arrive 15 minutes before departure and accept that you may need to stand for the first 20 kilometres until the first big stop empties some seats.
Top things to do in Plyos
- Isaac Levitan Memorial Museum — the wooden house where Levitan summered in 1888-1890 and painted "Golden Plyos" and "Quiet Abode", two of the most famous Russian landscapes.
- Levitan Hill (Gora Levitana) — the small hill above the town with the wooden Church of the Resurrection, the subject of Levitan's "Above Eternal Peace". The viewpoint over the Volga is the postcard of the Golden Ring's quieter half.
- Church of St. Barbara — a 1821 cliff-side wooden church rebuilt many times, with one of the most photographed silhouettes in Russia.
- Plyos Museum-Reserve — small but well-curated museum of merchant life and Volga history in a 19th-century customs house.
- Volga embankment promenade — fish-smoking stalls, cafes serving fresh sterlet, and the slow-moving river exactly as Levitan painted it 140 years ago.
