Paying for bus tickets in Russia: cards, SBP, Mir, cash
Editorial primer · 5 min read
The payment options for Russian bus aggregators changed sharply in 2022 and continue to drift. This is the practical map for foreign visitors as of 2026.
Mir cards
Russian-issued Mir cards are accepted by every aggregator and every counter. A foreign visitor staying long-term can open a Mir-only card at a Russian bank (Sberbank, VTB, Alfa-Bank) on production of a registered SIM card and a tourist registration slip. Tinkoff still issues Mir cards by post within 3 working days. Cards stop working when you leave the country only if you cancel them — they remain valid on Russian e-commerce.
System of Fast Payments (СБП / SBP)
SBP is Russia's instant bank-to-bank transfer rail. Aggregators let you generate a QR code at checkout; you scan it with your Russian bank app and the payment clears within seconds. SBP is strictly Russian-bank — you cannot fund it from a foreign bank. It is the fastest method for someone with a Russian account.
International Visa and Mastercard (issued pre-2022)
Cards issued by non-Russian banks before March 2022 still work sporadically on Russian aggregators — the 3-D Secure step sometimes fails. Carry a backup payment method. Cards issued since March 2022 by EU, UK or US banks generally do not work.
UnionPay (foreign-issued)
UnionPay cards issued by Chinese, Hungarian, Kazakh or Turkish banks are the most reliable foreign-bank route into the Russian payment system. Tutu and Yandex Travel accept them at checkout. Some smaller aggregators do not yet — the "Не принимаем UnionPay" sticker on the checkout screen tells you to look elsewhere.
Cash at the bus station counter
Universally accepted. Roubles only. The counter cashier issues a paper ticket and prints a fiscal receipt. This is the simplest method for visitors paying for one or two journeys without committing to a Russian bank account. Bring exact change for small carriers.
Apple Pay / Google Pay
Both ceased to work for foreign-bank cards in Russia in 2022. Russian-bank Mir cards still work via the Russian "Mir Pay" wallet on Android, but not via Apple Pay. For a foreign visitor, tap-to-pay is not a reliable option.
Recommended for a one-week visit
- Bring a UnionPay card as primary online method.
- Carry 5,000–10,000 ₽ in cash as backup.
- If staying longer than a month, open a Russian bank account on the third day for Mir + SBP access.
