Luggage rules on Russian intercity buses
Editorial guide · 4 min read
Russian intercity buses are generous with luggage by European standards. There's no fee for one suitcase, no weight check at the door, and the rules don't change for foreign passengers. Here is what to bring, where it goes, and what to leave behind.
The standard allowance
- 1 suitcase up to 20 kg, 70 × 50 × 30 cm in the hold (free).
- 1 cabin bag up to 5 kg in the seat-back compartment (free).
- 1 personal item (handbag, laptop sleeve) on your lap or under the seat (free).
The numbers are nominal — drivers rarely measure or weigh anything if your luggage fits in a normal suitcase. If you bring a second suitcase, you'll be asked to pay a small fee (200–500 ₽) or move it to your seat if there's an empty one.
The hold
The hold is unlocked at every scheduled stop. There is no attendant. Standard precautions: never put a laptop, phone or passport in a hold bag, never put cash or jewellery. Tag your suitcase with your name and Russian phone number. The driver hands out claim chits at boarding on long-distance services (≥ 6 hours); on shorter routes there is none and you collect by sight.
Items that must stay with you
- Passport, visa and registration slip.
- Phone, laptop, camera, jewellery, cash, prescription medicine.
- Lithium-ion batteries — by airline-style rule, in the cabin only.
Items that cannot travel
The standard prohibited list applies: weapons, gas canisters, flammable liquids, drugs. Alcohol up to 1 L per adult is fine in the hold. Pets are allowed in carriers up to 8 kg in the cabin on most carriers — but check at booking (some Suzdal and Vladimir routes refuse pets entirely).
Bicycles, skis and skateboards
Bicycles must be in a bike bag or partially disassembled (front wheel off, pedals reversed). Carrier policies vary — contact the carrier directly 48 hours in advance for any sport equipment over 1 m. Skateboards and folding scooters travel free as part of your cabin allowance.
Lost luggage
Rare. If it happens, contact the bus terminal of arrival first, then the carrier's dispatcher (number on your ticket). For e-ticket holders, the aggregator can mediate but is not liable. Liability ceiling per Russian transport regulations is 11 minimum wages per kg of declared baggage — practically, around 1,500 ₽/kg.
